Karel Garcia

(b. December 27, 1990)

Visual Artist & Architect | St. Petersburg, FL

Karel Garcia is a Cuban-born visual artist whose work tells the story of becoming free—free to live, to love, and to create without fear. After leaving Cuba, Karel found more than physical freedom; he discovered a new visual language rooted in memory, transformation, and the quiet power of identity.

His paintings are layered with personal myth and collective memory, often drawing on animal archetypes and childhood nostalgia to explore what it means to survive and belong. Each piece is deeply intentional—painted not just to be seen, but to be felt.

At We Art St. Pete, we’re proud to work with artists like Karel who create from a place of truth. His newest series, Aminál: Myth & Memory, is a testament to that—an invitation to witness the beauty, complexity, and courage it takes to be your full self.

Aminál: Myth & Memory
This Collectable series by Karel Garcia reimagines animal forms as vessels of childhood memory, ancestral myth, and personal transformation. Each of the 11 original works invites you into a dreamlike space where identity and imagination collide—bold, vulnerable, and deeply human.

Artist Statement

My work is a conversation between the child I once was and the person I am still becoming. Growing up in Cuba, I learned early how to express what could not be said out loud. After leaving the island, I began painting as a way to reclaim the parts of myself I had hidden or lost.

In my current body of work, I explore animal archetypes as symbols of power, identity, and protection. These creatures are not literal—they are emotional figures, guardians, and witnesses to my personal transformation. Through color, texture, and layered storytelling, I’m creating a visual mythology that honors the complexity of queer migration and the joy of finding freedom on your own terms.

For me, painting is both an excavation and an offering. It is how I navigate the world, and how I share the quiet resilience that lives in all of us who’ve had to start over, speak new languages, and fight for the right to be fully seen.
